Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Snowshoe Mountain is unarguably the best place to ski and snowboard in West Virginia.  The mountain is located roughly 4 hours from Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, and Richmond VA.  Nestled in Pocahontas County, Snowshoe is located on 11,000 acres at the second highest peak in West Virginia.

While not a day trip if you’re not in WV, its close enough for a quick weekend trip to get out of the city.

If you thought that Snowshoe was just a ski resort, you’ve been misinformed. I’ve been to Snowshoe many times over the years and wasn’t aware that half of these activities existed. With activities spanning all seasons, Snowshoe is a year round destination.

Winter Activities at Snowshoe

The beauty of Snowshoe lies in the fact that it sits on the 2 highest peaks in WV at an elevation of 4,848ft.  This high elevation makes it cooler than the surrounding areas creating a microclimate perfect for winter fun.  Snowshoe also has over 150 snow-guns guaranteeing you’ll have a nice layer of light dry powder to enjoy.

Skiing and Snowboarding. Of course.  Snowshoe Mountain offers 61 trails and 12 lifts allowing you days of mountain fun without ever getting bored of the same trails.  If you’re still not beat by sunset, head over to the Silver Creek area of Snowshoe and experience night skiing on 12 of the 18 trails.

Snow-tubing down a 6 story, 8 lane tubing hill.  This is great for the kids during the day and even better during the night when it’s covered in LED lights.

Snowmobiling.  Prefer to be sitting down while you’re dashing through the snow?  Choose from 3 different scenic tours around the mountain and through the pines.

Spring/Summer/Fall Activities at Snowshoe

Raven Golf Club.  While I’ve yet to play this course, the Raven Golf Club is an 18 hole PGA Championship course that’s on my bucket list.  Since Snowshoe Mountain Resort attracts tourists from around the country, Raven Golf Club kindly offers discounts to WV residents.

Segway or e-bike off road tour? Not really sure why this is a thing, but apparently it is…  If you’d like to take a tour of the mountain without expending any energy, then this is for you!

Snowshoe Bike Park. Ride down 40 trails and 1,500 vertical feet of descent on a mountain bike.  Since this is the largest trail system on the eastern side of the US, it’s a must if you ride.

Shaver’s Lake.  When the weather gets warm, spend your days relaxing on the beach or taking a swim.

Play 18 holes of Fairy Diddle Disk Golf. It’s called Frisbee Golf, Snowshoe Mountain management… Don’t try to make up new terms for things that already exist.  It’s called Frisbee Golf and should be played with caddies carrying a case of beer.

Scenic Lift Rides. Using the same lifts that transport you up and down the mountain during the winter, you’re able to relax and enjoy all of the beauty that WV has to offer.

Lastly, hiking 11,000 acres just because you need to get outdoors.

Year Round Activities at Snowshoe

Split Rock Pools.  Whether it’s for cooling off or warming up, the heated pool is always a good idea.  The pool runs indoor and outdoor, so just duck under the plastic divider and swim outside.

The Spa at Snowshoe. If you’ve been doing anything at Snowshoe, your muscles are going to get a little tight.  Head on over to the spa to get a massage, body treatment, facial, or full on salon services.

Yoga. I’ve been to exactly one yoga class in my life and never understood the draw of stretching with a group of people.  It might also explain why I can’t touch my toes and my back hurts so much.  If massage isn’t your thing, stretch those ski muscles out through Yoga.  Snowshoe offers indoor and outdoor Yoga classes depending on the time of year.

Off-Road Tours.  It’s not exactly the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, but you do get to Jump on a Polaris and take a scenic tour of the terrain and see parts of the mountain that few get to see.

Lodging at Snowshoe

While I would love to list all of the lodging options available at Snowshoe.  The truth is, there’s just too many and I haven’t stayed in any of them.  Until now, I’ve always lived close enough to make day trips.  Still waiting on that invite Snowshoe Mountain management….

They have over 30 different lodging options ranging from condos to resort homes with their most desirable options dubbed “The Brigham Collection”.  It’s better if I just drop a link here.

If the above activities still hasn’t convinced you that Snowshoe is the place that you need to be, maybe the below will help.
