Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area

Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area features 100,000 acres of unspoiled land that is managed by the Forest Service. Within the boundaries of this National Recreation Area is of course Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob, but also many other things to do.

SENECA ROCKS

A large crag and local landmark that is popular with many rock climbers, hikers, and Geo-cachers.

SPRUCE KNOB/SPRUCE MOUNTAIN

At 4,863, Spruce Knob is the highest point in the state and the peak of Spruce Mountain. It features 75 miles of hiking trails and a 25 acre lake stocked with trout.

SMOKE HOLE CANYONS

A rugged 20 mile gorge carved by the South Branch Potomac River, Smoke Hole Canyons is still relatively isolated and remote. Most of the canyon is only accessible by foot. It’s worth the hike though, due to the fact that it’s one of the most biologically rich places on the east cost.

SMOKE HOLE CAVERNS

Now a show cave, Smoke Hole Caverns was once used by moonshiners during Prohibition.

SENECA CAVERNS

Owned by the same family for almost 200 years, Seneca Caverns was finally opened to the public in 1930 after ownership changed hands. While the tour has quite a few steps, it’s child friendly with walkways through the cavern.

SENECA SHADOWS CAMPGROUND

Seneca Shadows Campground, a popular place to camp if climbing Seneca Rocks, overlooks Seneca Rocks and is surrounded by mountains on both the east and west.

BIG BEND CAMPGROUND

Big Bend Campground is a family-oriented campground along a bend on the South Branch Potomac River in Smoke Hole Canyon. With its convenient position on the river, the campground creates a recreation hub for fishing, tubing, kayaking, and swimming.
