International Mother’s Day Shrine
Located 45 minutes south of Morgantown, lies the birth of Mother’s Day. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
FUN FACTS ABOUT MOTHER’S DAY
- The white carnation became a symbol of Mother’s Day because it was Anna Jarvis’ mother’s favorite flower.
- It’s celebrated on the second Sunday of May because it marked the anniversary of Anna Jarvis’ mother’s death.
- Anna Jarvis loathed the commercialization of Mother’s Day and even tried to have the holiday rescinded.
