Kanawha State Forest
Located seven miles south of West Virginia’s Capital, Kanawha State Forest is an outdoor lover’s haven. Known for its extensive network of hiking and biking trails, it also has some of the state’s most popular picnic areas. The 9,300-acre forest is noted among naturalists for its diverse wildflower, tree and bird populations. Amenities include picnic shelters, playgrounds and camping.
THINGS TO DO INCLUDE:
Camping
Open April through December Kanawha State Forest has 46 camping sites, 25 of which have electricity and water hookups. Each campsite also has a fireplace and picnic table. The campground has two bathhouses and a coin-operated laundry.
Biking
Enjoy nine designated mountain biking trails with well over 25 miles to explore. Trails and guide maps are available at the park office.
Fishing
Fishing opportunities are available at the two-acre Ellison Pond, which is stocked with trout, bass and bluegill.
Hiking
Kanawha State Forest has more than 25 miles of trails for every level of hiker.
Hunting
Hunters are welcome in season and in specified areas. No-hunting zones surround all forest recreational facilities. Obviously.
